Sport
At GMS, sport plays an important role in the physical, mental, social and emotional development of our students. We emphasise participation in Irish cultural sports such as Hurling, Gaelic Football and Camogie. This is supported through the coordination of our P.E department and assistance of GAA coaches.
We also have a very successful athletics team, which is coached by our own P.E teacher and International sprinter, Ms. Healy. The team has had a lot of success winning medals at South Munster and Munster Track and Field events.
Music
Music is pivotal to our schools culture. Here at GMS, music is offered as a Junior Cycle subject and also provides students with the opportunity to participate in a broad range of musical activities, that allow them to develop their musical talents.
Music Generation and SoundOUT
Music Generation & Sound Out allows young people access to high quality performance education in their locality. They work in partnership to develop a range of inclusive bands with various schools. Students in this school have performed in a range of venues such as City Hall, Cork Opera House and in RTEs Elev8 Programme. Two students have represented the school internationally, when they performed for the Pope in the Sistine Chapel in Rome with “The Edge” from U2.
Musical
For the last three years, this school has worked in conjunction with Ballincollig Community School on the production of a school Musical which is showcased in Cork Opera House. The musical is funded by TOMAR and is directed by well-known Irish actor Ciarán Birmingham, who has starred in Game of Thrones, Young Offenders and in the Christmas Pantomime in the Everyman Theatre each year. Students from first year to fifth year are encouraged to participate.
